International borders politically divide the landscape but rarely represent barriers for environmental issues. The major issues surrounding the U.S.-Mexico border involve economics and population growth that present challenges to environmental management and natural resource planning. To monitor trends and analyze the stresses to the environment, binationally integrated baseline datasets that portray the status of the landscape are needed. The primary objective of this project is to develop integrated, environmental resource and human health datasets for display and further analysis within a geographic information system (GIS) framework. Datasets created for the Border Environmental Health Initiative (BEHI) follow watershed boundaries as defined by Woodward and Durall (1996). As part of the U.S.-Mexico Border Field Coordinating Committee Issues Team, Woodward and Durall used surface-water drainage basins as the primary basis for defining and delineating the extent of the border area from a shared-water resources perspective. In order to provide integrated datasets in the border region, local and regional BEHI datasets have been clipped to this boundary. This feature class is a binational compilation of urban areas for use in the USGS's BEHI. This dataset was compiled in phases delineated by the subareas of the project located at: http://borderhealth.cr.us.gov/ The data extent covers the entire state of Texas (TX), and the areas of California (CA), New Mexico (NM), Arizona (AZ), and Mexico (MX) that fall inside the BEHI study area. The TX, MX, CA, AZ, and NM data are from 2006. The data source for TX is the Texas Natural Information System's (TNRIS) Stratmap program at 1:24,000 scale. The data source for CA, AZ, and NM is the US Census Bureau at 1:24,000 scale. The data source for Mexico from their Instituto Nacional de Estadistica, Geografia, e Informatica (INEGI) at 1:50,000 scale.

Purpose:

To create a binational set of urban areas data to be used on maps of 1:50,000 scale or smaller along the U.S.-Mexico border. For the other datasets, the matching attribute fields were loaded into their respective fields. 3. Added Source field, State field, and Country field to the Binat_Urban_Areas and calculated accordingly. 4. Obtained US census 2000 and 2005 estimates (if available) from American Fact Finder for CA, AZ, and NM. The census population data for TX were already in the original data. 5. These data came from three different sources, each with different criteria for an urban area. For Mexican data from INEGI, an urban area is defined as: "Área donde existe un agrupamiento de construcciones permanentes, de acuerdo con una traza urbana, a la que se la asocia un nombre." This translates to "An area with a grouping of permanent constructions according to an urban plan, and that has a name associated with it." For the U.S. Census, the Census Bureau classifies as "urban" all territory, population, and housing units located within an urbanized area (UA) or an urban cluster (UC). It delineates UA and UC boundaries to encompass densely settled territory, which consists of: 1) core census block groups or blocks that have a population density of at least 1,000 people per square mile, and 2) surrounding census blocks that have an overall density of at least 500 people per square mile. In addition, under certain conditions, less densely settled territory may be part of each UA or UC. For TNRIS data, the data sources for each city polygon vary. Sources used were the Texas Department of Transportation data and local data from the council of governments or its component governments.

Entity_Type_Definition_Source:

U.S. Census, INEGI, TNRIS

Attribute:

Attribute_Label: OBJECTID

Attribute_Definition:

Internal feature number.

Attribute_Definition_Source:

ESRI

Attribute_Domain_Values:

Unrepresentable_Domain:

Sequential unique whole numbers that are automatically generated.

Attribute:

Attribute_Label: SHAPE

Attribute_Definition:

Feature geometry.

Attribute_Definition_Source:

ESRI

Attribute_Domain_Values:

Unrepresentable_Domain:

Coordinates defining the features.

Attribute:

Attribute_Label: SOURCE

Attribute_Definition:

Name of the agency that supplied the original data.

Attribute_Definition_Source:

TNRIS/US Census/INEGI

Attribute_Domain_Values:

Enumerated_Domain:

Enumerated_Domain_Value: COG

Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:

The agency that supplied the source data is the local council of governments

Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source:

author

Enumerated_Domain:

Enumerated_Domain_Value: TXDOT

Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:

The agency that supplied the data is the Texas Department of Transportation.

Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source:

author

Enumerated_Domain:

Enumerated_Domain_Value: INEGI Census

Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:

The agency that supplied the data is INEGI.

Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source:

author

Enumerated_Domain:

Enumerated_Domain_Value: US Census

Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:

The agency that supplied the data is the US Census Bureau.

Attribute:

Attribute_Label: LOCAL_ID

Attribute_Definition:

Internal localized object ID from original data.

Attribute_Domain_Values:

Unrepresentable_Domain:

Identification numbers that were imported from the source data.

Attribute:

Attribute_Label: NAME

Attribute_Definition:

Name of the urban area

Attribute_Definition_Source:

TNRIS/US Census/INEGI

Attribute_Domain_Values:

Unrepresentable_Domain:

Names of the urban areas.

Attribute:

Attribute_Label: POP_2000

Attribute_Definition:

U.S. Census 2000 population data.
