Maps & Data To facilitate binational analysis of environmental issues that involve human health, major efforts have been made to seamlessly integrate U.S. and Mexico geospatial datasets along common themes. Data are available through a variety of platforms. The Internet Mapping Service provides users with binational datasets and the tools to manipulate them over the Internet. Only an Internet browser is required. The interface allows users to zoom to areas of interest and select a combination of layers appropriate to their focus. Users can select an initial view of the entire border region or a particular subarea, then use the tools available to customize their view. Additionally, the IMS provides users with a Web Mapping Service (WMS) that allows layers to be incorporated into local GIS projects. The IMS and WMS work best with a fast internet connection. If such a connection is unavailable, similar data and smaller file sizes can be accessed using the Map and Image Library. A summary of Available Data Layers allows the users to research datasets by theme. Each layer available through the IMS is detailed with minimum and maximum viewable extents and scales. Metadata, WMS capabilities, and related information are available through this table. The layer name is hyperlinked to the layer's maximum extent within the IMS viewer. Please note: the layer of interest may not be activated within the viewer, so the user may need to manually turn on the layer. The Map and Image Library provides users with ready-made maps and images of common views and themes. These maps and iamges are easily integrated in presentations and aid in the analysis of environmental issues that involve human health. Data Tables provide additional information about data in tabular form. Information such as disease statistics and calculated distances from features are reported in this way. |
